Quiet Read 1.7 has just been released. These are the most important changes:

1. Tags. Links can be tagged. Link lists can be filtered by tags. Tags should also be exposed to Spotlight
2. Undo/Redo.
3. Links can be dragged out to other applications.
4. Links can be dragged out to the Finder to create webloc files.
5. Better contextual menus.
6. Fixes a couple of bugs related to the favicons.

So, the main new feature is tagging. The tags are hidden by default, but you can show them by pressing Command+I:

Select a link to view its assigned tags, or to add some new ones. The links list can be filtered by tag:

Quiet Read is also available on the App Store.

On January 6th, Apple will launch the Mac App Store. Keep Your Word, Quiet Read and Share will be available on it.

What is the Mac App Store?

According to Apple, “the Mac App Store is just like the App Store for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad”. It is a place, curated by Apple, where you will be able to find and download Mac apps.

You mentioned that your apps are going to be available on the App Store, didn’t you?

Yes, I did. Keep Your Word, Quiet Read and Share will be available on the App Store.

Does that mean that your apps will only be available on the App Store?

No, it does not. The three apps will still be available for purchase on bambooapps online store. And also, on the Mac App Store.

I purchased a copy of Keep Your Word/ Quiet Read Pro/ Share a couple of months ago. Can I download it from the App Store?

I am afraid you can not (unless you want to pay for it again). There is no way to “import” a license into the App Store. If you purchased a license on our online store, you will have to keep on using the app that is distributed outside Apple’s App Store.

So, does that mean that if I purchased an application on your website, I won’t be getting any more updates?

No. Here is the thing: don’t tell anyone, but there are two actual versions of each application, one will be available on the App Store, and the other one will be available outside the App Store. Both versions will be getting updates regularly, at the same time.

Are the features of both versions of your applications exactly the same?

Almost. All the applications available on the App Store have to be tested, and approved by Apple. We developers get a set of guidelines that we have to stick to. That means that a feature that might be available in the out-of-the-store version might not be available in the App Store version, for a given application. Usually, the most feature-rich version will be the one available outside the App Store.

And what about the pricing. Will it be the same?

Yes.

Ok, great, so what do I have to do now? Why are you telling me all this?

Well, that’s the good news. You don’t have to do anything special. Just keep on using the applications, you will still be getting regular updates. I just wanted to let you know that. Oh, and I also wanted to wish you a happy new year.

One of Quiet Read’s most requested features is Dropbox syncing. Well, it’s not available at this moment, and I can’t honestly say if it will ever be.

However, Tomas Schlosser has found a way to use Dropbox as a repository for both the links and favicons.

Please, bear in mind that this setup is not officially supported by us, and that, as Tomas points out, very bad things can happen when changes to Quiet Read’s link list happen simultaneously in more than one machine. I am not even sure how Quiet Read would react to changes made in both directions.

So, insert here a bunch of disclaimers, I-told-you-not-to-do-it’s, and YMMV’s.

1. An option, in the app preferences, to get a proper window and a dock icon instead of the icon in the menu bar.
2. New url shortening service: http://is.gd. trim.it is not supported anymore.

This update does not bring many exciting new features (unless you are a Quiet Read Pro user and are very excited by the new “Send to delicious”), but fixes some annoying bugs, and makes the app more solid and reliable.

To update Quiet Read, open the app’s preferences, go to the “General” panel, and click the “Check for updates now” button.
